First Regional Meeting on Road Safety Announced

The Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety announced the celebration of its First Regional Meeting for Latin America. The event will take place from November 5 to 7 at the Barceló Hotel in Mexico City and will bring together 60 organizations from 15 Latin American countries. The main objective of the meeting is to exchange proposals and strategies to safeguard lives and reduce the number of road traffic incidents in the region, in line with global goals for 2030. The event is supported by the Aleatica Foundation for Road Safety.

According to data provided by the Aleatica Foundation and the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety, the economic impact of road traffic incidents in Latin America amounts to an estimated annual cost of 4.3% of the regional GDP. In countries such as Brazil and Mexico, the costs are estimated to reach $85.1 billion and $49.8 billion respectively.

Bosco Martín, president of the Aleatica Foundation, highlighted that in Mexico, 43 lives are lost daily due to traffic incidents, which equates to one tragedy every half hour for a Mexican family. During the meeting, symposia, workshops, and strategic sessions are planned to address the urgent road safety challenges in the region and achieve the targets for 2030.

Sonia Aguilar González, Global Coordinator for Latin America of the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety, emphasized the importance of the event as a crucial milestone for exchanging experiences, sharing best practices, and making joint commitments to save lives through the adoption of road safety practices.

The road safety goals for 2030 discussed in the meeting include halving the deaths and injuries from road traffic incidents, increasing the number of safe roads, protecting vulnerable road users, strengthening public-private partnerships, and the crucial role of NGOs in road safety.
